Sheinbaum vows to stand by unionized workers in preserving their wages and labor-related advantages

Five days into the official launch of the presidential pre-campaign, the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) aligned itself with presidential candidate hopeful Claudia Sheinbaum.

During the XV National Ordinary Congress of this labor union, comprising 1,194 organizations and unions nationwide, the National Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the 4T urged workers to back her candidacy. At the Arena Ciudad de México, the former head of government vowed to uphold the defense of workers’ wages and benefits.

“I extend this invitation to all to join us in this endeavor, and I pledge to Mexican workers that we will persist in safeguarding their wages and labor benefits because we recognize that when Mexican workers thrive, so does our country,” she stated.

Sheinbaum Pardo also emphasized the increase in the minimum wage, which has tripled in the northern border zone since 2018 and doubled in the rest of the country, with “historic” foreign direct investment, and without triggering inflation.

In this context, Pedro Haces Barba, General Secretary of CATEM, recalled the labor milestones achieved during the current government, such as union freedom, the elimination of outsourcing, enhanced profit sharing, and the minimum wage hike.

Regarding the latter, the senator urged the business sector to “listen to their conscience” and ensure a substantial salary increase for workers in 2024.

“To entrepreneurs, I make a heartfelt plea; we hope that this year you listen to your conscience. Paco, don’t pretend to be oblivious. Entrepreneurs should listen to their conscience to ensure a substantial salary increase for all Mexicans,” he emphasized.

With the formation of 10,000 Committees for the Defense of Labor Transformation, CATEM committed to endorsing presidential hopeful Claudia Sheinbaum. Pedro Haces Pedro Haces
