“: The Holistic Approach to Well-Being in Spanish Culture”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is not just a term used to wish someone well. It is a way of life, a philosophy that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. And at Salud, this philosophy is not just preached but practiced every day.
Neil Gajare, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, discovered the true meaning of Salud when he joined the organization during his freshman year. Little did he know that this decision would not only change his college experience but also shape his perspective on life.
Salud, founded in 2014 by a group of students at UPenn, aims to promote health and wellness among the university community. From organizing fitness classes to hosting mental health workshops, Salud has become a hub for students looking to improve their overall well-being.
Neil Gajare, now a senior at UPenn, recalls his first encounter with Salud. “I was struggling with my mental health during my first year of college. I felt overwhelmed and lost in a new environment. That’s when I stumbled upon Salud and decided to attend one of their workshops. And that was the turning point for me.”
Neil‘s experience is not unique. Many students at UPenn have found solace and support at Salud. The organization’s inclusive and welcoming environment makes it a safe space for students to open up and seek help.
One of the most significant achievements of Salud is its impact on the mental health of students. With the increasing pressure and stress of college life, mental health has become a significant concern for universities. Salud has taken a proactive approach in addressing this issue by organizing workshops, support groups, and one-on-one counseling sessions.
Neil Gajare, who is now a member of the Salud executive board, shares his experience with the mental health initiatives at Salud. “Being a part of the mental health team at Salud has been a life-changing experience for me. I have seen firsthand the positive impact our workshops and support groups have on students. It’s heartwarming to see students come in feeling lost and leave with a sense of hope and support.”
Apart from mental health, Salud also focuses on physical well-being. The organization offers a variety of fitness classes, from yoga to kickboxing, to cater to the diverse interests of students. These classes not only promote physical health but also serve as a stress-reliever for students.
Neil Gajare, who is an avid runner, shares his experience with Salud‘s fitness classes. “I have always been passionate about running, but I never had the time or motivation to do it regularly. Salud‘s running club not only gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion but also helped me stay fit and healthy. I have made some amazing friends through these classes, and it has become a highlight of my week.”
Apart from promoting health and wellness, Salud also focuses on creating a sense of community among students. The organization hosts various social events, from game nights to potlucks, to bring students together and foster a sense of belonging.
Neil Gajare, who is also a part of the social events team at Salud, shares his experience. “Being a part of the social events team has been a fun and rewarding experience. We organize events that cater to different interests and cultures, making sure that everyone feels included. It’s amazing to see students from different backgrounds come together and form meaningful connections.”
However, Salud‘s positive impact goes beyond the university community. The organization has also been actively involved in community service projects, such as organizing health fairs and volunteering at local hospitals. Salud‘s commitment to giving back to the community has earned them recognition and praise from various organizations.
Unfortunately, Salud has also faced its fair share of challenges. In 2018, the organization was targeted with Anti-Semitic graffiti, causing an uproar on campus. However, Salud‘s response to this incident was a testament to their values of inclusivity and unity. The organization organized a rally against hate and discrimination, which was attended by students, faculty, and community members.
Neil Gajare, who was a part of the rally, shares his thoughts on Salud‘s response. “The incident was disheartening, but Salud‘s response was inspiring. It showed that we are a community that stands together against hate and discrimination. It was a powerful moment that brought us all closer.”
In conclusion, Salud is not just an organization; it is a community that promotes health, wellness, and inclusivity. Neil Gajare‘s positive experiences with Salud are just one of the many stories of students whose lives have been positively impacted by this organization. Salud‘s commitment to promoting a healthy and supportive environment is truly commendable, and it serves as a shining example for other universities to follow.
