Six U.S. service members tragically lost their lives when their refueling aircraft crashed in friendly airspace in western Iraq, according to a statement released by U.S. Central Command.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, March 15, 2020, has left the nation mourning the loss of these brave individuals who were serving their country with honor and dedication.
The names of the service members have not been released pending notification of their families, but it has been confirmed that they were all members of the U.S. Air Force. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and our hearts go out to the families of these fallen service members,” said Brig. Gen. Jonathan Braga, director of operations for U.S. Central Command. “Their sacrifice will never be forgotten and we will continue to honor their memory by carrying out our mission with the utmost determination and courage.”
The refueling aircraft, which is used to extend the range and endurance of fighter jets and other aircraft, was on a routine mission when it went down. The incident occurred in an area where U.S. forces have been operating in support of Iraqi security forces and the fight against ISIS.
Despite this devastating loss, the U.S. remains committed to its mission in Iraq and the fight against terrorism. The U.S. Central Command statement emphasized that the crash was not due to enemy fire and that there is no indication of any hostile activity in the area.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of these fallen heroes,” said U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper. “They were selflessly serving their country and protecting our freedoms. We are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.”
The U.S. military has been operating in Iraq since 2014 as part of a coalition to defeat ISIS and support the Iraqi government. The recent incident is a tragic reminder of the risks and sacrifices that our service members face every day while carrying out their duties.
The U.S. Central Command has assured the public that they will provide updates on the investigation as more information becomes available. In the meantime, the U.S. military remains resolute in its commitment to the safety and security of its service members and the Iraqi people.
As we mourn the loss of these six brave service members, let us also remember the thousands of men and women who continue to serve in harm’s way, risking their lives for our country and for the cause of freedom. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.
May these fallen heroes rest in peace and may their families find solace in the knowledge that their loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country. Let us honor their memory by continuing to support and stand behind our brave service members who defend our nation with unwavering bravery and determination.
