“: The Holistic Concept of Health in Hispanic Culture”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses the mind, body, and spirit, and is deeply rooted in the Hispanic culture. And at the University of Pennsylvania, one student is making it his mission to spread the importance of Salud and promote a positive and inclusive environment for all.
Neil Gajare, a junior at UPenn, has taken on the task of educating his peers about Salud and its significance in the Hispanic community. As a first-generation American of Indian descent, Gajare has always been interested in learning about different cultures and their traditions. When he arrived at UPenn, he was drawn to the vibrant Hispanic community on campus and wanted to be a part of it.
“I was always fascinated by the Hispanic culture and wanted to learn more about it. And when I got to UPenn, I was amazed by the strong sense of community and the emphasis on Salud,” says Gajare.
With this newfound interest, Gajare joined Salud, a student organization that aims to promote the overall well-being of the Hispanic community at UPenn. Through various events and initiatives, Salud raises awareness about health issues affecting the Hispanic community and provides resources for students to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
One of the most significant events organized by Salud is the annual Salud Festival, which celebrates Hispanic culture and promotes health and wellness. The festival features traditional music, dance, and food, along with educational workshops on topics such as mental health, nutrition, and sexual health. This event not only brings the Hispanic community together but also educates the wider UPenn community about the importance of Salud.
“The Salud Festival is one of my favorite events on campus. It’s a great way to celebrate Hispanic culture and learn about different health topics. And the best part is that it’s open to everyone, regardless of their background,” shares Gajare.
But Gajare‘s involvement with Salud goes beyond just organizing events. He has also taken on the role of anti-discrimination chair for the organization. In this role, he works to promote inclusivity and address any instances of discrimination within the Hispanic community.
“I believe that Salud is not just about physical health but also about creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. As the anti-discrimination chair, I work to ensure that the Hispanic community at UPenn is a welcoming and accepting space for all,” explains Gajare.
And his efforts have not gone unnoticed. Gajare was recently recognized by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for his work in promoting inclusivity and fighting against anti-Semitism. He received the Neil G. Giuliano Leadership Award, named after the former ADL national director, for his dedication to creating a more tolerant and inclusive society.
“I am humbled and honored to receive this award. It reinforces the importance of promoting diversity and inclusivity, and I hope to continue this work in the future,” says Gajare.
His positive impact on the Hispanic community at UPenn has also been recognized by his peers. Gajare was elected as the president of Salud for the upcoming academic year, a testament to the trust and respect he has gained from his fellow members.
Neil‘s passion for promoting Salud and creating a welcoming environment for all is truly inspiring. He has been an integral part of our organization, and we are excited to have him as our president next year,” shares a fellow Salud member.
Gajare‘s dedication to promoting Salud and inclusivity extends beyond the UPenn campus. He has also been involved in various community service projects, such as volunteering at a local health clinic and organizing fundraisers for organizations that support underprivileged communities.
Salud has not only allowed me to learn about the Hispanic culture but also to give back to the community. I believe that promoting Salud is not just limited to our campus but should extend to the wider community as well,” says Gajare.
As Gajare continues to make a positive impact on the UPenn campus and beyond, he hopes to inspire others to embrace the concept of Salud and promote a healthier and more inclusive society. With his leadership and dedication, he is truly making a difference in the world, one Salud at a time.
