The New Scientist Book Club recently delved into the far future with our February read, Tim Winton’s thought-provoking novel, Juice. As always, our members had plenty to say about this unique and captivating book. Head of books, Alison Flood, has rounded up their thoughts to share with you.
Juice takes place in a world where humans have evolved to live underwater, and the surface is a barren wasteland. The story follows the journey of a young girl, Oriel, as she navigates this new world and discovers the secrets of her past. Winton’s vivid descriptions and imaginative world-building had our book club members hooked from the very first page.
One member described the book as “a refreshing take on the dystopian genre.” They were impressed by Winton’s ability to create a believable and detailed underwater society, and found themselves completely immersed in the story. Another member praised the book for its “strong and complex characters,” particularly Oriel, who they found to be a relatable and inspiring protagonist.
The book also sparked discussions about the themes of environmentalism and the consequences of human actions. One member noted, “Juice serves as a cautionary tale about the impact of climate change and the importance of preserving our planet.” Winton’s portrayal of a world where humans have destroyed the surface and are forced to adapt to a new way of life was both thought-provoking and unsettling.
Another aspect of the book that received high praise was Winton’s writing style. Many members commented on the beautiful and poetic language used throughout the novel. One member said, “Winton’s writing is like a breath of fresh air. It’s lyrical and evocative, and it really transports you to this underwater world.” It’s clear that Winton’s writing was a highlight for many of our book club members.
Overall, Juice was a hit with our book club. It sparked lively discussions and left a lasting impression on our members. As one member put it, “This book will stay with me for a long time. It’s a powerful and thought-provoking read that I highly recommend to anyone.”
If you haven’t had a chance to read Juice yet, we highly recommend adding it to your reading list. It’s a unique and captivating story that will leave you thinking long after you’ve finished the last page. And if you have read it, we would love to hear your thoughts and join in on the discussion. Happy reading!
