Vietnam War POW Robert Stirm, seen in ‘Burst of Joy’ photo with family, dies at 92

Former U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Robert Stirm, a Vietnam War veteran who became known for the iconic “Burst of Joy” photo, has passed away at the age of 83 in California. Stirm, who spent six years as a prisoner of war, will always be remembered for his bravery, resilience, and the powerful image that captured the hearts of millions around the world.

Stirm’s journey began in 1967 when he was deployed to Vietnam as a fighter pilot. He was shot down over Hanoi and captured by the North Vietnamese, enduring six years of torture and captivity. Despite the unimaginable hardships he faced, Stirm never lost hope and remained determined to survive and return home to his family.

In 1973, after years of negotiations, Stirm and 590 other American prisoners of war were released and finally able to return home. The world watched in awe as Stirm stepped off the plane and into the arms of his family, including his wife Loretta and their four children. The emotional reunion was captured by Associated Press photographer Slava “Sal” Veder, who took the now-famous “Burst of Joy” photo.

The photo, which shows Stirm’s daughter running towards him with open arms while his son salutes in his military uniform, became a symbol of hope, love, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. It quickly became one of the most iconic images of the Vietnam War and has been reproduced and displayed in countless museums, books, and documentaries.

Stirm’s daughter, Lorrie, who was only 15 at the time of the reunion, recently shared her memories of that momentous day. She described the overwhelming emotions she felt as she ran towards her father, not knowing if he would even recognize her after so many years apart. But as soon as she saw his face, she knew it was him and they shared a tearful embrace that would be forever captured in history.

Stirm’s son, Bob Jr., also reflected on the impact of the photo and his father’s legacy. He said, “The photo represents the joy of freedom and the love of family. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices that our military members and their families make every day.”

After his release, Stirm continued to serve in the Air Force for another 13 years before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He then went on to work for the Department of Defense and later became a motivational speaker, sharing his experiences and inspiring others with his message of resilience and hope.

Stirm’s passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his story. But his legacy will live on through the “Burst of Joy” photo and the countless lives he has touched with his courage and determination.

In a statement, Stirm’s family said, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was a true American hero who never gave up and always fought for what he believed in. He will be deeply missed but his spirit will live on in our hearts forever.”

Former President George H.W. Bush, who was a prisoner of war himself during World War II, also paid tribute to Stirm, saying, “Bob Stirm was a true patriot and a symbol of the strength and resilience of our military. His story will continue to inspire generations to come.”

As we mourn the loss of a hero, let us also celebrate the life and legacy of Lt. Col. Robert Stirm. He will always be remembered as a symbol of hope, love, and the enduring spirit of the American people. Rest in peace, Colonel. Your sacrifice and bravery will never be forgotten.
