Testimony Before House Judiciary Committee on Venezuela

Today, I had the privilege of testifying before the House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on Oversight, about the actions taken in Venezuela. The hearing was titled, “Examining the Crisis in Venezuela: Human Rights Violations and Political Instability,” and it was an opportunity for me to share my expertise and insights on this pressing issue.

As a diplomat and foreign policy expert, I have closely followed the developments in Venezuela and have witnessed firsthand the dire situation that the Venezuelan people are facing. The economic and political crisis in Venezuela has resulted in widespread human rights violations, including arbitrary detentions, torture, and censorship. The country is also facing a severe shortage of food and medicine, leading to a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions.

In my testimony, I highlighted the role of the authoritarian regime of President Nicolas Maduro in exacerbating the crisis. The Maduro government has consistently violated the rule of law and undermined democratic institutions, leading to the current state of affairs in Venezuela. The recent election, which was widely condemned as fraudulent, has only further cemented Maduro’s grip on power and deepened the suffering of the Venezuelan people.

During the hearing, I also emphasized the need for the United States to take decisive action to address the crisis in Venezuela. The U.S. has a moral obligation to stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and support their struggle for freedom and democracy. This includes imposing targeted sanctions on individuals responsible for human rights abuses and providing humanitarian aid to those in need.

I also commended the efforts of the international community, particularly the Lima Group, in addressing the crisis in Venezuela. The Lima Group, comprised of 14 countries in the region, has been a strong advocate for democracy and human rights in Venezuela. I urged the U.S. to work closely with the Lima Group and other allies to increase pressure on the Maduro regime and support the Venezuelan people’s aspirations for a better future.

Furthermore, I stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of the crisis in Venezuela, which includes the need for economic reforms and the restoration of democratic institutions. The U.S. should support efforts to promote dialogue between the Maduro government and the opposition, with the goal of finding a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis.

In conclusion, I expressed my gratitude to the House Judiciary Committee and the Subcommittee on Oversight for holding this important hearing and shedding light on the human rights violations and political instability in Venezuela. I hope that my testimony has provided valuable insights and recommendations on how the U.S. can play a constructive role in addressing this crisis. We must continue to stand with the Venezuelan people and support their struggle for freedom and democracy. The future of Venezuela depends on it.
