As the world eagerly awaits the start of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, ABC News’ Maggie Rulli caught up with some of the U.S. Olympians to get a glimpse of the excitement and anticipation building up to the games.

With just a few months left until the opening ceremony, the athletes are in the final stages of their preparations, both physically and mentally. And for many of them, this will be their first time competing on the world’s biggest stage.

“I am beyond thrilled to represent my country at the Olympics,” said figure skater, Nathan Chen. “It’s always been a dream of mine and I can’t wait to finally make it a reality.”

For these athletes, the Olympics is not just about winning medals, but also about the experience and the opportunity to showcase their skills and hard work to the world.

“I am excited to compete against the best of the best and show the world what I am capable of,” said snowboarder, Chloe Kim. “It’s a chance to inspire others and make my country proud.”

The Winter Olympics is a unique event that brings together athletes from different countries and backgrounds, all united by their love for their sport. And for many, it’s a chance to form new friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime.

“I am looking forward to meeting athletes from other countries and learning about their cultures,” said speed skater, Maame Biney. “It’s amazing how sports can bring people together and create a sense of camaraderie.”

The U.S. Olympians are also excited to compete in Italy, a country known for its rich history, culture, and of course, delicious food.

“I can’t wait to experience the Italian culture and try out some authentic Italian cuisine,” said alpine skier, Mikaela Shiffrin. “But most importantly, I am focused on giving my best performance on the slopes and making my country proud.”

The Winter Olympics is not just about the athletes, but also about the host country. And for Italy, this is a chance to showcase their beautiful cities and stunning landscapes to the world.

“I am thrilled to compete in Italy, a country with such a rich history and beautiful scenery,” said bobsledder, Elana Meyers Taylor. “I hope to take some time to explore and immerse myself in the Italian culture during my stay.”

As the countdown to the Winter Olympics begins, the U.S. Olympians are determined to make their mark and bring home medals for their country. But more importantly, they are excited to be a part of this global event and inspire others to follow their dreams.

“I hope to inspire young athletes to never give up on their dreams and to always work hard towards their goals,” said cross-country skier, Jessie Diggins. “The Olympics is a reminder that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and never give up.”
