Delaware State Police say DMV gunman let customers leave, fired at approaching officers

Investigators have revealed new details about the tragic shooting that took place at a Delaware State Police DMV office on Wednesday. According to authorities, the suspect, a 26-year-old man, had allowed customers to leave the office before opening fire on approaching officers, resulting in the death of a trooper.

The incident occurred at around 11 a.m. at the DMV office in New Castle, Delaware. The suspect, identified as Burgon Sealy Jr., had entered the office with a gun and began firing at the trooper, who was stationed at the front desk. The trooper, who has been identified as 32-year-old Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard, was struck by the gunfire and later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

Investigators have stated that Sealy had allowed customers to leave the office before engaging in a shootout with other officers who had responded to the scene. The exchange of gunfire resulted in Sealy being fatally shot. No other individuals were injured in the incident.

The motive behind the shooting is still unknown, but authorities have stated that Sealy had a history of run-ins with law enforcement. He had previously been arrested for weapons and drug charges and was also wanted on a probation violation. However, it is unclear if these factors played a role in the shooting.

The tragic event has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of Cpl. Ballard. He was a 8-year veteran of the Delaware State Police and was described as a dedicated and well-respected officer. Colleagues and community members have expressed their condolences and shared memories of Cpl. Ballard, highlighting his bravery and commitment to serving and protecting the community.

Delaware Governor John Carney has also released a statement, expressing his sadness and offering his support to the family and colleagues of Cpl. Ballard. He stated, “Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of a brave Delaware State Police trooper who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting our community. Cpl. Ballard will always be remembered for his selfless dedication and commitment to keeping our state safe.”

The shooting has also sparked a conversation about the safety of law enforcement officers and the need for stricter gun control laws. Many are calling for action to be taken to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the community is coming together to support the family and colleagues of Cpl. Ballard. A memorial has been set up outside the DMV office, with flowers, candles, and messages of gratitude and remembrance. A GoFundMe page has also been created to support Cpl. Ballard’s family during this difficult time.

The loss of Cpl. Ballard is a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day while protecting our communities. He will be remembered as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this tragic time.
