As the debate over who is the greatest basketball player of all time rages on, one former NBA star has weighed in with his opinion. Horace Grant, a four-time NBA champion and teammate of both Michael Jordan and LeBron James, recently spoke out on the topic and had some strong words to say.
In an exclusive interview with Heavy Sports, Grant expressed his frustration with the ongoing Jordan vs. LeBron GOAT debate. “It’s outrageous,” he said. “Both of these players are incredible in their own right and have achieved so much in their careers. It’s unfair to compare them and try to determine who is the greatest.”
Grant, who played alongside Jordan during the Chicago Bulls’ first three-peat in the early 1990s, knows firsthand just how dominant Jordan was on the court. But he also recognizes the incredible talent and achievements of James, who is currently in his 18th season in the NBA and still going strong at the age of 41.
“Michael was a once-in-a-generation player,” Grant said. “His drive, his determination, his skill – it was unmatched. But LeBron is also a once-in-a-generation player. He’s been dominating the league for almost two decades now and shows no signs of slowing down. It’s truly remarkable.”
Grant also pointed out that the two players have different styles of play and have faced different challenges in their careers. “Michael was a pure scorer, while LeBron is a more well-rounded player who can do it all,” he explained. “And let’s not forget that LeBron has had to face much tougher competition in the league. The level of talent and athleticism in the NBA today is on a whole other level compared to when Michael played.”
The former power forward also addressed the argument that Jordan’s six NBA championships make him the clear GOAT. “Yes, Michael has six rings, but he also had a great supporting cast,” Grant said. “LeBron has had to carry his teams on his back for most of his career. And let’s not forget that he’s been to the NBA Finals 10 times – that’s an incredible achievement in itself.”
Grant’s comments come at a time when James is once again dominating the league, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the top of the Western Conference standings. At 41 years old, he is still playing at an elite level and showing no signs of slowing down. This has only fueled the GOAT debate even more, with many arguing that James has surpassed Jordan as the greatest of all time.
But for Grant, it’s not about choosing one over the other. “Both Michael and LeBron are legends in their own right,” he said. “They have both left their mark on the game and have inspired countless players to strive for greatness. We should appreciate and celebrate both of them instead of trying to pit them against each other.”
In the end, Grant believes that the GOAT debate is a never-ending argument that will never have a definitive answer. “It’s all subjective,” he said. “Everyone has their own opinion and that’s what makes sports so great. But for me, both Michael and LeBron are the GOATs in their own way.”
As the debate continues to rage on, one thing is for sure – both Michael Jordan and LeBron James have solidified their places in basketball history and will always be remembered as two of the greatest players to ever grace the court. And that’s something that Horace Grant, and all basketball fans, can agree on.
