Cobre Panamá donates a cultivation facility to the University of Panama

In addition to the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá provided a storage facility for supplies, materials, and tools, an irrigation system, and cucumber seeds that will be responsible for launching the educational activities of this greenhouse.

• The University of Panama received a 230m2 cultivation facility donated by Cobre Panamá.

• Students will have the opportunity to create a controlled microclimate with the purpose of cultivating healthier fruits and vegetables.

(Feb 1, 2022 – web) Panama. – Promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural production alternatives is one of the objectives that Cobre Panamá, the company near the mine, is pursuing with neighboring communities. Under this premise, the company donated a 230m2 cultivation facility (tropicalized greenhouse) to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama.

“We want to thank the mining company for this contribution to strengthen the Agroforestry Engineering program. Through this cultivation facility, our students will be able to learn about this technology that has been increasing worldwide with the aim of producing food in confined spaces in a more environmentally friendly manner,” said Fulgencio Álvarez, director of the Coclé University Center.

With this contribution, approximately 100 students in the fields of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering will have the opportunity to learn from these enclosed spaces that allow farmers to create a microclimate by controlling temperature, environmental factors, and humidity. This, in turn, enables out-of-season production, reduces water consumption through an automated irrigation system, and minimizes the use of phytotoxic chemicals, ensuring healthier fruit and vegetable harvests for everyone.

In this regard, Miguel Jaén, manager of Community Affairs for the mining company, encouraged students at the Regional Center to continue their studies and delve deeper into these modern techniques.

“At Cobre Panamá, we have been committed for 12 years to working on the complete educational cycle of the people in our neighboring communities through various programs that support them from early childhood to university. For example, with the Comprehensive Schools program that includes sustainable production components to ensure food security in 70 educational centers and scholarships for higher education that we offer to young people to motivate them to pursue university studies,” concluded the Manager of Community Affairs.

Through this initiative, Cobre Panamá also supports the development and ongoing innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). In addition to the cultivation facility, Cobre Panamá provided a storage facility for supplies, materials, and tools, an irrigation system, and cucumber seeds that will be responsible for inaugurating the educational activities of this greenhouse.
