Dallas Cowboys franchise quarterback Dak Prescott shared his first reaction to the teamโs decision to acquire former No. 3 pick Trey Lance in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. Prescott expressed sadness over knowing Will Grier is heading elsewhere but noted that he plans to โwelcomeโ Lance upon his arrival in Dallas.
โObviously, I understand itโs a business,โ Prescott told reporters on August 26, 2023. โThatโs a first-round talent and youโre always trying to make your team better.
โBut that [move] was the front office, so weโre going to welcome him as we do any teammate, and hopefully just he makes us better and then weโre gonna continue to get back at it. I know weโve got one goal as a team.โ
Prescott did not wish to discuss whether he believed the trade will have any impact on the teamโs ongoing discussions about a contract extension. The star still has two seasons remaining on his current $160 million deal.
โIโm going leave those talks in the office where business is handled,โ Prescott added. โSo, [there will] come a time when that happens.โ

Owner Jerry Jones turned heads when he revealed that the trade was not discussed with Prescott or head coach Mike McCarthy prior to landing Lance. The Cowboys owner added that he has not been in contact with Prescott since the team finalized the deal for Lance.
โ[Prescott] is just โ in terms of what a quarterback is about โ that No. 1 is somebody that the team will follow,โ Jones told DallasCowboys.comโs Nick Harris. โHeโs the best Iโve ever seen or heard about. And just to hang out in that company will be a great asset to [Lance].โ
Jerry Jones on Trey Lance Trade: โIt Didnโt Cross My Mind, Period, About an Impact Here Regarding Dakโ

Jones dismissed the notion that the acquisition of Lance was part of a negotiation tactic heading towards Prescottโs next deal. Yet, the timing is not insignificant with Prescott coming off a career-high 15 interceptions and eventually in line for a massive new contract.
โIt didnโt cross my mind, period, about an impact here regarding Dak,โ Jones remarked to reporters on August 26. โI know that Dak wants to do anything that we can do to improve this team, and weโre going to do it.
โThe facts are that the decision to bring in as high a quality of talent as we could thatโs evolving or a young talent that is basically gaining, improving, getting better that you would be as a young talent. Thatโs something that weโve been trying to do, but itโs just never the opportunity seems to be there so often,โ Jones added.
โBut weโve been trying to do what we did today with this trade almost every draft since Iโve been drafting. โฆWe donโt really, we very seldom ever talk to anybody about another player about who weโre thinking about drafting, or who weโre thinking about getting involved with. We donโt do that.โ

It has been a challenging offseason for Prescott as the team also made the decision to release longtime friend Ezekiel Elliott. Prescott headed into the preseason finale wearing Elliottโs old Ohio State jersey. As for the Lance trade, Prescott revealed that hardly any NFL move catches him by surprise.
โTo be honest with you, Iโm not surprised by anything anymore,โ Prescott explained. โYouโve been in this league eight years, been on this team, itโs hard to say that I was surprised, to be honest with you.โ
