The mobilization promises to be extensive, this Monday, July 3. This is the third strike action by territorial civil servants since last year. The inter-union is asking for an increase in the index point of 3.5 points, between 2023 and 2024. This data is used to calculate salaries. Unlike state civil servants, territorial agents have not benefited from a revaluation since 2017.

Around 20,000 working people and 6,000 retirees are concerned. Schools will be greatly impacted. Many parents of students have taken the lead. Anaïs, a CHT official, has two children. She will be on strike from Monday. I have to go on strike, it’s still complicated to live today. We need a salary increase, says this mother.

We organize to look after the children

Christian is the father of three children. He took the day off on Monday. We organize ourselves to look after the children who don’t have school tomorrow. At least we are warned, it’s already not bad, underlines Christian. On the Place des Cocotiers, Adèle, originally from Maré, is on vacation in Nouméa. She has just learned of the organization of the strike. Luckily we have family in the tribe. We’re going to babysit our three children. Also, my husband doesn’t work. In any case, we have a solution, specifies the Maréenne.

For the time being, the number of strikers is not known, but the boarding schools in the North province are already closed. In Païta as in Poindimié, the schools are closed and the school transport service will not be provided. Parents are advised to inquire about all of Le Caillou.

Hospitals, dispensaries, administrations, provinces and municipal services are also affected. The indefinite strike begins this Sunday, July 2 at midnight.
